Today I took it somewhat easy again. First I visited the Visitor Centre
to see what birds were about, and then spent some time at the Spruce Bog
bird feeders waiting for interesting birds, to no avail. Then I hiked from
the Spruce Bog Trail along a portage trail to Sproule Lake and back.
A moose track along the
Sproule Lake portage trail. Notice the "bow-tie" shape. This
results from the animal stepping into the track, moving its
body forward, and then removing its foot. Its hoof is larger
than its leg bone, resulting in this distinctive track
shape.
A grove of hemlocks, seemingly
moving to an ancient rhythm that we can no longer hear.
Sproule Lake.
I was a little bit chilly
so I made a small campfire to warm up.
Two red foxes had been using
the portage trail just recently. When they reached the end,
they headed out onto the lake. Although this looks like one
set of tracks, it is actually BOTH foxes, the second one
carefully stepping in the tracks of the first.
