Algonquin Winter Tracking
Algonquin Winter Tracking 2012
Thursday (Day 6)
Another easy day - main reason
is I have been fighting a bad cold all week. So, off to
the Visitor Centre to look at the birds. And this time I got
a fine photograph of the Evening Grosbeaks. Here's the male
(left) and female (right). |
And also at the Visitor Centre
... Is this red squirrel cute or what? :) |
Back up the Opeongo Road,
where I found this Black-capped Chickadee with a white face.
Otherwise normal and healthy, this condition is known as "leucistic". |
The spilled bird food
attracted this Pine Marten today. Another "cute" picture! |
I then went for a hike up to
the end of the Opeongo Road. Here's a view through the swamp
that it passes through. No one else about. |
The crowning moment of the day
- and indeed of the week - came at the end of the day. I
have been coming up here at this time every year for 8 years,
and have tracked these animals many times. But until today I
have never seen one.
A Wolf!!! |
This one was at the limit of
my camera and 400mm lens. But the equipment came through for
me and I captured quite a few good photos. |
Here is the wolf - a male -
scent marking a fallen tree. I judged it too late to go
out and examine and follow its tracks. Hopefully it won't
snow overnight and I can go look in the morning.
Not long after the wolf sighting, I saw a Fisher, also
not an animal that is commonly seen. But it disappeared so
fast that I couldn't get any photos. |
