Algonquin Winter Tracking 2012

Monday (Day 3)

This day began with a short visit to the end of the Bluff Lake portage.
Back up the Opeongo Road (yes it's one of my favorite places!).

I found these tracks of an indecisive otter on the frozen surface of a creek. It had run towards the right, then abruptly turned around.

On this spectacular sunny day I climbed the high bluff overlooking Hermit Creek (where I was exploring yesterday).

In this photo the Hermit Creek bog is visible below, on both sides of the snowy space.

A view to the south.

There are pines up here, and a nice open area to eat lunch, assuming it's a nice sunny day with little or no wind, like today!

An interesting pattern made by the feet of a small bird as it foraged for food on a snowbank.
If you are a track photographer, this is one to die for. It features the wing prints (both wings) and tail feather fan of a raven as it landed.
Otters aren't the only animals that like to slide. Mink will do it too.

Here is the trail of a mink that slid down an embankment in the forest, then ran off towards the left.
