Algonquin Winter Tracking
Algonquin Winter Tracking Expedition 2009
|
Monday (Day 2)
|
|
We split into two groups today (as per usual). The group I was with
followed a set of Moose tracks out across Sassejewun Lake. |

Studying the tracks up close. |

|
We followed the Moose tracks across the lake, up into the forest to the top of a
ridge. There we found where the Moose had rubbed itself against a tree and left behind a Moose Tick. We
continued to follow the Moose but broke off our tracking as we figured we were getting too close to the
animal and didn't want to harass it. From the size of its tracks it appeared to be a young animal, and
therefore probably with minimal reserves.

So we took off back to the lake and north to a couple of other lakes. It
was a nice calm sunny day, so while others explored, a couple of us took advantage of the weather and
scored some rays! |

Farther up the lake was a beautiful set of Wolf tracks. To the right, just
barely visible in this photo, is a nice set of Red Fox tracks. |

|
This trail was the prize of the day for me! During the previous week there was a
big thaw, along with some rain. In the aftermath of that an Otter had crossed this lake, sliding most of
the way on its stomach as they love to do. It was cold enough immediately afterwards to freeze its trail
in the ice! |
