Algonquin Winter Tracking Expedition 2008

Sunday (Day 1)

The week begins Sunday at noon with a trip to the Algonquin Park Visitor Centre for an orientation and introduction to the Park.

The Visitor Centre overlooks a huge boggy area at the back.

It was pretty hazy and overcast today. In fact, it was RAINING. In mid-February. In Algonquin Park. Bizarre.

There were a bunch of Pine Grosbeaks hanging out at the bird feeder at the back of the Visitor's Centre.

Afterwards we did actually go out tracking in the rain, which was pouring at times! We found some fisher and deer tracks north of Pog Lake and followed them for quite a ways.

Sorry, no photos, as I did not take my camera due to the rain.

Later on, after supper, we viewed an introductory slide presentation on tracking and the animals we were likely to see tracks of this week.

The rain changed over to freezing rain in the late afternoon and evening, creating pools of water along the highway and extremely slippery (treacherous) driving conditions!
