Algonquin Winter Tracking Expedition 2007

Sunday (Day 1)

The week starts Sunday afternoon. We went to the Algonquin Park Visitor's Centre for an orientation to the park and its resident wildlife. The Visitor's Centre also has an excellent bookstore.

The balcony of the Visitor Centre overlooks some forest and a huge bog (not shown in this photo).

Down below the balcony is a large bird feeder with lots of Evening Grosbeaks milling about.
When we left the Visitor Centre we went tracking for a while near Sunday Lake. Here's a nice set of Red Squirrel tracks.
Nearby we found some Wolf tracks and followed them for about an hour.

It took us quite a while to find a clear print in order to positively identify this as the trail of a small Wolf.

On the way back we passed some Moose eating salty snow by the side of the highway.
In the evening we watched an introductory presentation on tracking and tracks.
