Algonquin Tracking Expedition 2005

Friday (Day 6)

Last day.

Today we didn't go out tracking. Instead we met at the Algonquin Park visitor centre and watched an in depth presentation by Dan about tracks and sign and tracking. We also had a final opportunity to shop at the centre's excellent bookstore.

Overall, it was quite a week. We had opportunities to track animals such as wolves that we might never have found on our own. Dan and his sidekick Alexis provided excellent quality instruction about the tracks and sign that we came upon.  Caren, the cook, provided us with nutritious and filling meals every day.

I found that this week of tracking, with the instruction, provided me with quite a boost in my tracking skills.

I'll finish off this report with a few photos of the wildlife research station, which is where we stayed and had our meals and evening activities.

This is one of the cabins that participants stayed in. It is very basic accommodation: four bare wood bunk beds with mattresses. The cabins are heated, however.
This is the "Director's Cabin", where our we ate our meals and had the evening programs.
The inside of the Director's cabin. Basic and simple.

This ain't no "steak-and-potatoes-and-wine" cushy-style expedition! Essentially, the cabins are simply more convenient than camping for the week, and allow the group to focus on the actual tracking, which is what everyone was there for.

This is a view from the dam, near the cabins. There's a lot of chickadees near here, who will willingly land on your hand for handouts.
